| Reward Offered in Train
Collision A $5000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for a collision in Central Texas on September 24th. The collision involved freight trains belonging to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Union Pacific railroads. The rear 50 cars of one train were detached and rolled free for over 2 miles. About 25 cars were derailed. Union Pacific believes that illegal riders on the BNSF train may have tampered with air valves, detaching the cars and disabling automatic braking systems. President of the Bexar County Rail District Bruce Flohr explained in the San Antonio Express (October 2, 2004) that "thieves can tamper with air valves to stop a train or keep it from moving in order to steal cargo. Such tampering by illegal riders in border areas allows them to board or get off."
